Washington Capitals Tickets Information
The Washington Capitals play their home games at Verizon Center (formerly MCI Center) in the nation's capital, Washington D.C. The facility has since been, appropriately enough, nicknamed "The Phone Booth".
In their 35 year history, the Washington Capitals have seen three of their former teammates inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame: Mike Gartner in 2001, Rod Langway in 2002, and Larry Murphy in 2003.
Among the Caps' greatest assets are two namesakes who also played together for their native Russia during the 2004-05 NHL lockout: Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin. Alexander Semin scored 3 goals each for the Russian team in the 2005 and 2006 World Championships. Semin then got the 2006-07 season off to a stupendous start, scoring the first goal of the season for the Caps, in October against the New York Rangers.
His first year with the team, Semin's comrade Ovechkin ranked third in goals (52) and points (106) scored among all rookies of all-time, earning himself a place in history and that year's Calder Memorial Trophy.
Interestingly enough, Ovechkin comes from an accomplished athletic family background, with father Mikhail in professional soccer and mother Tatiana a two-time Olympic gold medalist on the Soviet Union's basketball team in 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow. Ovechkin is currently a cover athlete for EA Sports' popular NHL video game.
In fact, although the Capitals had a disappointing 2005-06, each game they played the scores were close, with many other players on the team also boasting record seasons, like Dainius Zebrus scoring 57 points, Matt Pettinger with 20 goals and 38 points, and Jeff Halpern accumulating a personal best of 33 assists. That bodes well for the Caps in 2006-07. Getting your Washington Capitals tickets now will give you the chance to see the next record-breaking moments up close and personal.
Sadly Halpern, team captain at the time, left during the 2006 off-season to join the Dallas Stars, but former Calgary Flames Stanley Cup winner Chris Clark quickly jumped in to take his place. Between Clark, Ovechkin, and Zebrus, the Washington Capitals now have a top line to seriously contend with.
Then there's Olaf Kolzig, another primo reason to snare your Washington Capitals tickets as soon as you can. Olie the Goalie, as he's become known, has been with the Caps since 1989 after many years in the American Hockey League. Kolzig is as renowned for his excellent performance off the ice as well as on, earning the Vezina Trophy in 2000 for the year's best goaltender and the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2006 for humanitarianism (he co-founded Athletes Against Autism).
