The San Diego Chargers are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference West Division (AFC West) – along with the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders – and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The team known fondly to its fans as the “Bolts”, the “Frightening Lightning”, and the “Super Chargers”, the Chargers have been playing football since 1960, though at that time unded the name the Los Angeles Chargers, as part of the Western Division of the American Football League. They only remained the Los Angeles Chargers for their first season, becoming the San Diego Chargers we know them to be today in 1961.

During that time, the Chargers dominated their division for the first half of the ‘60s, winning the AFL West Division championships in 1960, 1961, and 1963-65. The San Diego Chargers appeared in 5 AFL championships and were the AFL champions once, in 1963, beating the Boston Patriots 51-10. The Chargers remained with the AFL West until 1969.

The San Diego Chargers joined the NFL and the AFC West Division in 1970. Since then they have won 7 AFC West Division championships (1979-81, 1992, 1994, 2004, and 2006) and 1 AFC conference championship (1994).

Since 1967, the San Diego Chargers have been playing their home games at the 71,000+ seat Qualcomm Stadium (known previously, in turn, as San Diego Stadium and Jack Murphy Stadium. The team uniform colors are powder blue, navy blue, gold, and white.

They are currently under the leadership of newly hired head coach Norv Turner who marks 2007 as his first season with the team. It’s far from his first in pro football, though. Norv Turner has also been head coach of the Oakland Raiders (2004-05) and the Washington Redskins (1994-2000). He’s also been on the coaching and administrative staffs of the San Francisco 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, and the NCAA football teams for the University of Southern California and University of Oregon.

A number of Chargers have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: flanker Lance Alworth (1962-70; inducted 1978), quarterback Dan Fouts (1973-87; inducted 1993), coach Sid Gillman (1960-69, 1971; inducted 1983), wide receiver Charlie Joiner (1976-86; inducted 1996), defensive end Deacon Jones (1972-73; inducted 1980), offensive guard Larry Little (1967-68; inducted 1993), tight end John Mackey (1972; inducted 1992), offensive tackle Ron Mix (1960-69; inducted 1979), quarterback Johnny Unitas (1973; inducted 1979), and tight end Kellen Winslow (1979-87; inducted 1995).
