The Oakland Raiders are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference West Division (AFC West) – along with the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, and San Diego Chargers - and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The team known fondly to its fans as “Da Raidas” and “The Silver and Black”, the Raiders have been playing football since 1960 as part of the American Football League, Western Division of which they remained a part until 1969. During this time they won 3 AFL West Division championships, consecutively (1967-69) and 1 AFL championship (1967 beating the Houston Oilers 40-7).

The Oakland Raiders joined the NFL and the AFC West Division in 1970. Since then they have won a whopping dozen AFC West Division championships (1970, 1972-76, 1983, 1985, 1990, 2000-02) and 4 AFC conference championships (1976, 1980, 1983, 2002). The team spent the decade-plus span from 1982 to 1995 in Los Angeles, California as the Los Angeles Raiders, where they picked up their 3rd (and most recent) Super Bowl win, but otherwise only made 2 playoff appearances and both of those losing appearances.

Since the advent of the Super Bowl, the Raiders have played in 5 Super Bowls and won 3 – Super Bowl XI in 1977 beating the Minnesota Vikings 32-14, Super Bowl XV in 1981 beating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10, and Super Bowl XVIII in 1984 (as the Los Angeles Raiders) beating the Washington Redskins 38-9.

The Silver and Black have called many fields home over the years – namely: Kezar Stadium, Candlestick Park, Frank Youell Field, Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. As of 1995 the Oakland Raiders have been playing their home games at the 63,000+ seat McAfee Coliseum (aka Network Associates Coliseum, or Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, and most commonly The Coliseum) in Oakland, California, also home to the MLB’s Oakland Athletics. Da Raidas uniform colors are silver and black.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Lane Kiffin who is in his first season with the team, having been in this role since 2007. At 31 years old, this makes Lane Kiffin the youngest NFL head coach in history, replacing Eric Mangini of the New York Jets and also recent-hire Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Before this, Lane Kiffin was on the coaching and administrative staffs of the NCAA football teams for the University of Southern California and his alma mater Fresno State University.
