The New Orleans Saints are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference South Division (NFC South) – along with the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The Saints have been playing football since 1967 as part of the NFL and its Eastern Conference, switching back and forth between the Capitol Division (1967 and 1969) and Century Division (1968). When the New Orleans Saints first joined the NFC in 1970, it was as part of the NFC West Division, during which time they won 2 NFC West division championships (1991, 2000). They didn’t join the NFC South Division until 2002. Since then they have won 1 NFC South Division championship, that being the most recent one, in 2006. They have to date one no conference championships.

The New Orleans Saints are one of only three teams – the others being the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans –never to have appeared in an NFL Championship Game or Super Bowl.  

Since 1975, the New Orleans Saints have been playing their home games at the 69,000+ seat Louisiana Superdome (aka “The Dome”, “Superdome”, “New Orleans Superdome”). Due to Hurricane Katrina, however, they spent the year 2005 as nomads of a sort, playing 4 games at Tiger Stadium, 3 games at Alamodome, and 1 game at Giants Stadium. The team uniform colors are old gold, black, and white, and their mascot is Gumbo, the dog.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Sean Payton who has been in this role since 2006. Before that, he was on the coaching and administrative staffs of the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the NCAA football teams of the Unversity of Illinois, University of Miami-Ohio, San Diego State Unversity, and Indiana State University. Sean Payton led his New Orleans Saints to their first NFC championship appearance.

A number of Saints have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: defensive end Doug Atkins, running back Earl Campbell, General Manager Jim Finks, Head Coach Hank Stram, fullback Jim Taylor, and Head Coach Mike Ditka. The New Orleans Saints also have their own Hall of Fame where they’ve additionally honored 30+ other New Orleans Saints members.
