Also known fondly to their fans as the “Pats”, the Patriots have been playing football since 1960 as part of the American Football League, Eastern Division of which they remained a part until 1969. In 1963 they won the AFL Eastern Division championships.

The New England Patriots  joined the NFL and the AFC East Division in 1970. Since then they won 9 AFC East Division championships (1978, 1986, 1996-97, 2001, 2003-06) and 5 AFC conference championships (1985, 1996, 2001, 2003-04).

Since the 1966 advent of the Super Bowl, the Patriots have played in 5 Super Bowls and won 3 - Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002 beating the St. Louis Rams 20-17, Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 beating the Carolina Panthers 32-29, Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005 beating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21. Before 1966, the Patriots played in 1 NFL championship, in 1963 against the San Diego Chargers, but lost 51-10.

Since 2002 the New England Patriots have played their home games at the 68,756 seat Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Before then, from 1971-2001, they played at Foxboro Stadium, also known in turn as Schaefer Stadium and Sullivan Stadium. The team uniform colors are new century silver, nautical blue, red, and white. Their mascot is revolutionary-era minuteman Pat Patriot.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Bill Belichick who has been in the role since 2000. Bill Belichick is one of the most acclaimed coaches in NFL history, leading his team to 3 AFC championship wins and 3 Super Bowl wins. He was NFL Head Coach of the Year for 2003. His career record is 111-81-0 regular season, 13-9 postseason, 124-84-0 overall. Before taking on the Pats, Belichcik was head coach for the Cleveland Browns, assistant head coach for the New York Jets, and special teams coach for the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos.

A number of Patriots have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: linebacker for the Boston Patriots Nick Buoniconti (1962-68; inducted 2001), offensive guard John Hannah (1973-85; inducted 1991), and defensive back Mike Haynes (1976-82; inducted 1997).
