The Kansas City Chiefs are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference West Division (AFC West) – along with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers - and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The team now known as the Chiefs has been playing football since 1960 when they started out as the Dallas Texans, one of the American Football League, Western Division’s charter members. Between 1960 and 1969, they won 3 AFL West Division championships (1962, 1965-66) and 3 AFL championships (1962, 1966, 1969).

The Kansas City Chiefs joined the NFL and the AFC West Division in 1970. Since then they have won 5 AFC West Division championships (1971, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2003) but no AFC conference championships.

The Kansas City Chiefs have only one Super Bowl victory, this in 1969 at Super Bowl IV – only the second AFL-NFL championship to bear the official “Super Bowl” moniker – beating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7.

Since 1972 the Kansas City Chiefs have been playing their home games at the 79,000+ seat Arrowhead Stadium (aka “The Red Sea”) in Kansas City, Missouri, reputed to be “the Toughest Place to Play” for its notoriously loud fans. The team has sold out every home game at Arrowhead Stadium for the last 17 seasons.

The team uniform colors are red, gold, and white. Their mascot since 1989 has been K.C. Wolf who replaced Chiefs mascot from 1963, a gelding named Warpaint, and was the first NFL mascot to be inducted into the Official Mascot Hall of Fame.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Herman “Herm” Edwards who has been in this role since 2006. Before that, he was head coach of the New York Jets from 2001 to 2005. Herm Edwards also boasts an illustrious career playing in the NFL as cornerback of the Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles.

A number of Chiefs have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: running back Marcus Allen (1993-97; inducted 2003), linebacker Bobby Bell (1963-74; inducted 1983), lineman Buck Buchanan (1963-75; inducted 1990), quarterback Len Dawson (1963-75; inducted 1987), founder/owner Lamar Hunt (1960-2006; inducted 1972), middle linebacker Willie “Contact” Lanier (1967-77; inducted 1986), head coach Marv Levy (1978-82; inducted 2001), quarterback Joe Montana (1993-94; inducted 2000), quarterback Warren Moon (1999-2000; inducted 2006), placekicker Jan Stenerud (1967-79; inducted 1991), coach of the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs Hank Stram (1960-74; inducted 2003), and center and offensive line coach Mike Webster (1989-90; inducted 1997).
