The Houston Texans are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference South Division (AFC South) – along with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans - and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

A young franchise compared to its peers, the Texans have been playing football since 2002 when they joined the NFL and the AFC South Division as an expansion team after Houston’s previous NFL franchise, the Houston Oilers shipped themselves off to Nashville Tennessee to become the Tennessee Titans.

The Houston Texans have never appeared in a Super Bowl, one of six teams with this distinction, the others being: Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New Orleans Saints.

nor have they won any division or conference championships. They are, however, only the second expansion team since way back in 1960 to win their first game of the regular season (defeating the Dallas Cowboys 19-10). They’re also the first and only team in the history of the NFL to win their two initial opening day games, opening 2003 by crushing the Miami Dolphins.

The Houston Texans play their home games at the 71,500-seat Reliant Stadium. The team uniform colors are battle red, deep steel blue, and liberty white. The team mascot is Toro, a fictitious 6-foot tall bull born to parents ‘Tex’ and ‘Ann’ under the zodiac sign of Taurus.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Gary Kubiak who has been in this role since 2006, replacing the Texans’ only other coach Dom Capers. Before that, he had appeared with the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos in six Super Bowls, losing the three he attended as a player and winning the three he attended as a coach. While playing from 1983-91 Gary Kubiak was backup quarterback to the legendary John Elway.

A number of Texans have earned their way into the pro football history books, including Pro Bowl selections defensive back Aaron Glenn and defensive tackle Gary Walker (2002), wide receiver Andre Johnson (2004 and 2006), and KR Jerome Mathis (2005).

8 players from the original 2002 Houston Texans are still with the team today, those being offensive linemen Chester Pitts, Fred Weary, and Steve McKinney, linebacker Kailee Wong, and defensive backs Demarcus Faggins, Jason Simmons, kicker Kris Brown, and punter Chad Stanley.

The Houston Texans are one of only three teams – the others being the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Baltimore Ravens – never to have a former member (player, coach, owner) enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame.
