The Dallas Cowboys are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference East Division (NFC East) – along with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

Based out of Irving, Texas, the team known fondly to its fans as “The Boys” and “America’s Team”, the Cowboys have been playing NFL football since joining as an expansion team in 1960.

Starting out as part of the NFL West conference, the team moved to the East Conference just one year later, in 1961 and in 1967 becoming part of its Capitol Division. During this time the Cowboys won 4 NFL Capitol Division championships, consecutively (1966-69) and 2 NFL Eastern Conference championships, also consecutively (1966, 1967).

The Dallas Cowboys  joined the NFC East Division in 1970. Since then they have won 15 NFC East Division championships (1970-71, 1973, 1976-79, 1981, 1985, 1992-96, 1998) and 8 NFC conference championships (1970-71, 1975, 1977-78, 1992-93, 1995).

Since the advent of the Super Bowl, the Cowboys have played in 8 Super Bowls and won 5 – Super Bowl VI in 1972 beating the Miami Dolpins 24-3, Super Bowl XXII in 1978 beating the Denver Broncos 27-10, Super Bowl XXVII in 1993 beating the Buffalo Bills 52-17, and again the very next year in 1994 at Super XXVIII beating the very same Buffalo Bills , this time 30-13, and most recently at Super Bowl XXX in 1996 beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17.

After playing all their home games before joining the NFC at the Cotton Bowl, the NFC West Dallas Cowboys now play their home games at the 65,000+ seat Texas Stadium. A new home field for the Dallas Cowboys is expected to open in 2009. The team uniform colors are metallic silver, metallic silver-green, royal blue, navy blue, and white.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Wade Phillips who, as of 2007, is in his first year with the team. This is far from his first NFL head coaching position though, as he also headed the Atlanta Falcons (interim), Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos for a time. Before that, he was on the coaching and administrative staffs of the San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, and Houston Oilers.

A number of Cowboys have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame: quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Tony Dorsett, wide receiver Michael Irvin, head coach Tom Landry, defensive tackle Bob Lilly, safety/cornerback Mel Renfro, president/General Manager Tex Schramm, quarterback Roger Staubach, defensive tackle Randy White, and offensive tackle Rayfield Wright.
