The Chicago Bears are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference North Division (NFC North) – along with the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

First formed in 1919 in Decatur Illinois as the Decatur Staleys, the team now known fondly to its fans as “The Monsters of the Midway” and “Da Bears” moved to their current home in Chicago in 1921, taking on the name, the Chicago Staleys. Finally, one year later, in 1922, they became the Chicago Bears we know them to be today.

Before becoming a part of the NFC, Da Bears moved through several divisions and conferences in the NFL, namely: the Western Division in 1933 to the National Conference in 1950 to the Western Conference in 1953 and, in 1967, its Central Division.

During this time, the Bears were a force to be reckoned with, picking up 8 NFL West division championship wins (1933-34, 1937, 1940-43, 1946), 2 NFL Western Conference wins (1956, 1963), and 8 NFL championships (1921, 1932-33, 1940-41, 1943, 1946, 1963).

When moving to the NFC in 1970, the Chicago Bears  joined the Central Division first, winning 6 NFC Central division championships (1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 2001) and 1 NFC conference championship (1985) before switching in 2002 to the NFC North Division, where they remain today.

Wherever they play, the Chicago Bears are a ruthless oppponent, already notching 2 more division titles for the past two seasons consecutively (2005 and 2006) and 1 more NFC conference championship, that being this past year’s as well (2006), making them the reigning NFC champs.

Since the advent of the Super Bowl, the Bears have played in 2 Super Bowls and won 1 – Super Bowl XX in 1986 beating the New England Patriots 46-10. The other Super Bowl the Chicago Bears appeared in was this most recent one, Super Bowl XLI in 2007, which they lost 29-17 to the Indianapolis Colts.

From the time they set foot in Chicago and up until 1970, the Bears have played their home games at the world-famous Wrigley Field. From 1971 on, the Bears have been playing all their home games at the 61,500 seat Soldier Field, with the exception of 2002 when Chicago Bears home games were held in Memorial Stadium on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus while Soldier Field was undergoing renovations.

The team uniform colors are orange, navy blue, and white. Their mascot is Stanley Da Bear. More Chicago Bears have earned their way into the NFL Hall of Fame than any other team, with 26 enshrinees to date.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Lovie Smmith who has been in this role since 2004. Before that, he was on the coaching and administrative staffs of the St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the NCAA football teams for Ohio State University, University of Tennessee, University of Kentucky, Arizona State University, University of Wisconsin, and University of Tulsa.
