The Buffalo Bills are one of 4 teams in the American Football Conference East Division (AFC East) – along with.the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets - and one of 16 teams in the AFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The Bills have been playing football since 1960 as part of the American Football League of which they remained a part until 1969. In 1963 they made it to the AFL Eastern Division playoffs but lost 26-8 to the Boston Patriots. The following 2 years in a row, however, the Buffalo Bills won the AFL Championship, both times against the San Diego Chargers, 20-7 in 1964, and 23-0 in 1965. In 1966 they made it to the AFL championship again, but lost 31-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Buffalo Bills joined the NFL and the AFC East Division in 1970. Since then, they have won 7 AFC East Division championships (in 1980, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1995) and 4 consecutive AFC conference championships (in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1993).

Since the 1966 advent of the Super Bowl, the Bills have played in 4 Super Bowls (consecutively) and won 0. Those were Super Bowl XXV in 1991 losing 20-19 to the New York Giants, Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 losing 37-24 to the Washington Redskins, Super Bowl XXVII losing to the 52-17 to the Dallas Cowboys, and Super Bowl XXVIII losing 30-13 again to the Dallas Cowboys.

From 1960 to 1972 the Buffalo Bills played their home games at the War Memorial Stadium. Since 1972 they’ve played all home games at the now 80,000 seat Ralph Wilson Stadium (better known as“The Ralph” ), in Orchard Park, New York.

The team uniform colors are light blue, navy blue, light red, red, nickel, royal, and white. The mascot is Billy Buffalo. Since 1988 the Bills’ fight song has been “Buffalo Bills Shout” by the Buffalo Bills All-Stars.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Dick Jauron who was given the job in January of 2006. Before that, he was interem head coach of the Detroit Lions (2005), and head coach of the Chicago Bears (1999-2003). He played defensive back at Yale and was picked in the 1973 draft by the Detroit Lions, with whom he stayed until 1977, after which he played for the Cincinnati Bengals until 1980. Dick Jauron’s career record is 43-59-0 for the regular season, 0-1-0 for the postseason, and 43-60-0 overall.

A number of Bills have earned their way into the pro football history books, including the following who’ve been honored by entry into the NFL Hall of Fame: offensive guard Joe DeLamielleure (played with the team 1973-79 and 1985; inducted 2003), quarterback Jim Kelly (played with the team 1986-96; inducted 2002), coach Marv Levy (led the team 1986-97; inducted 2001), wide receiver James Lofton (played with the team 1989-92; inducted 2003), offensive guard Billy Shaw (played with the AFL Bills 1961-69; inducted 1999), running back O.J. Simpson (played with the team 1969-77; inducted 1985), and running back Thurman Thomas (played with the team 1988-99; inducted 2007).
