The Arizona Cardinals are one of 4 teams in the National Football Conference West Division (NFC West) – along with.the St. Louis Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Seattle Seahawks – and one of 16 teams in the NFC which in turn is one of the two conferences in the National Football League (NFL).

The team known fondly to its fans as “The Cards”, “Big Red” and “The Birds”, the Arizona Cardinals have been playing football since 1898. They were then called the Morgan Athletic Club and proceeded to go through 7 other name changes – the Racine Normals (1889-1900), the Racine Cardinals (1901-06, 1913-19), the Chicago Cardinals (1920-1943), Card-Pitt (1944), the Chicago Cardinals (again, 1945-59), the St. Louis Cardinals (1960-87), the Phoenix Cardinals (1988-93) – before becoming the Arizona Cardinals we know them to be today.

Before 1970 when they became a part of the NFC and, at the time, the East Division, the Cardinals belonged to the NFL West Division, winning the Western Division championships twice consecutively, in 1947 and 1948. During their time in the NFL West, they shifted through several divisions and conferences, starting with the Western Division in 1933, switching to the American Conference in 1950, then the Eastern Conference in 1953 and, as of 1967, its Century Division.

As part of the NFC East Division, the Cards won two consecutive division championships, in 1974 and 1975. The Birds then, in 2002,  joined the NFC West Division, where they remain today. Since then they have yet to win an NFC West Division championship. In all their time on the field, the Arizona Cardinals have yet to win a conference championship or a Super Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals have called many fields home in their career, most memorably Busch Stadium (and then Busch Memorial Stadium) from 1960 to 1987 and Sun Devil Stadium from 1988-2005. But as of 2006 have been playing their home games at the newly unveiled 67,000+ seat University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, also new home to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The team uniform colors are cardinal red, black, and white. Their mascot is Big Red, the 6’4” bird with a 7’ wingspan.

They are currently under the leadership of head coach Ken Whisenhunt who is in his first season in this role. Albeit a rookie at head coaching, Ken Whisenhunt is no rookie to the NFL, also having been on the coaching and administrative staffs of the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens (as well as the NCAA football team for Vanderbilt University). He also played tight end on the Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, and New York Jets.

A number of Cardinals have earned their way into the pro football history books, including many who’ve been honored by entry into NFL Hall of Fame, though all under the names Chicago Cardinals and St. Louis Cardinals. There have yet to be any Arizona Cardinals enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame.
