The Dorchester, Massachusetts daughter of devoutly Christian parents, the young church choir singer formed in her teenage years The Crow, a funk group in which she was the sole African-American member. Almost landing a role in Broadway’s “Hair” at the age of 18, she then moved to Germany to perform in numerous musicals like Show Boat and Godspell. While there in Munich, she also sang onstage at the Viennese Folk Opera and with a pop band named Munich Machine.

After a failed initial solo release with the European single Sally Go Round the Mountain, the performer then still known as LaDonna Gaines married Helmuth Sommer, an Austrian actor, and adopted the new, anglicized name we know her by today. It was also during this time that she gave birth to a little girl they named Mimi.

Spending some time singing backup for Three Dog Night and other groups, Donna Summer finally caught the eye of producers who helped her put out her debut album called “Lady of the Night,” boasting the #1 hit in Europe, Belgium, and France, The Hostage.

After that successful debut, Donna Summer went on to release 16 more albums including the 1979 smash hit “Bad Girls” before her most recent album, her 18 th, “Crayons.” She also released over 30 compilation albums. In addition to “Bad Girls,” Donna Summer saw two of her other albums hitting number 1 on U.S. Billboard charts – Live and More and On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2 – as well as 3 other top 10 albums – “Love to Love You Baby,” “I Remember Yesterday,” “She Works Hard for the Money.”

Of her more than 80 singles, 20 hit the U.S. Billboard Top 40, 14 of which hit the Top 10, and four of which – MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, and No More Tears (Enough is Enough) (with Barbra Streisand) - hit #1.

Far more than just a disco singer, Donna Summer’s musical range spans pop, rock, R&B, as well as gospel, the genre in which she first got her vocal training. Setting the ‘70’s and ‘80’s alight, superstar Donna Summer has sold over 125 million albums worldwide.

Donna Summer holds several Billboard records: one for putting out three consecutive #1 double albums, and another for being the first female recording artist to deliver four #1 hit singles in a single year’s time. She was also the first artist, male or female, to notch a #1 hit on Billboard Dance charts in every decade of the past four.

In 2007, Donna Summer was honored by being nominated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, although surprisingly she did not end up receiving that induction.

Her newest album, 2008’s “Crayons” sees her first studio release in 17 years of new material, its first single being Stamp Your Feet. The album is the highest debuting album of her career and the best-received album on the Billboard Charts since “She Works Hard for the Money.”

The newest Donna Summer Tour opens on July 18 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, and plays through August 31 at the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota.
